Oman: Muscat Youth Summit 2010 (English)Mar 14, 2012
Muscat Youth Summit 2010: www.muscatyouthsummit.com Presented by Brand Oman Management Unit www.brandoman.om The Muscat Youth Summit is an annual initiative organized by the Brand Oman Management Unit (BOMU) supported by UNESCO, the Sultanate's Ministry of Education and the Oman National Commission for Education, Culture and Science. Given the Sultanate's demographics -- over 40 per cent of the nation's population is 15 or under - issues related to youth are of significant interest to us. The purpose of the Muscat Youth Summit is to give youth a voice in the planning of activities and programs for their communities and to provide information to adults making decisions that affect their lives. The Summit is a free-of-charge, three-day residential program aimed at 15--24 year-olds drawn from the Middle East, Asia, Europe and North America. We firmly believe that truly effective youth programs are marked by high levels of youth involvement - not just as program recipients, but as valuable resources who give program direction. Indeed, when youth have a voice - a voice that's heard and acted on by adults - they have the power to change the world for the better.

The first ever Valuable Indigenous Peoples (VIP) Forum was finally held in Baler, Aurora on June 24- 25, 2010. Different regions from the Philippines joined the activity to celebrate and honor the value of indigenous peoples (IPs) in our society. IPs are mostly quoted as minorities and marginalized sector of our society, but during the VIP Forum, IPs were referred to as "valuable" people of our country. Their significance to our history was also highlighted in the forum. They were represented by three major tribes in the country. They are the Igorot in Luzon, Ati in Visayas and Higaonon in Mindanao. The activity opened an opportunity for the IPs to present their needs and share their learning experiences from the Community Development Program that ASKI, TSKI and HSPFI extended to their communities. IP leaders articulately presented the socio- economic conditions of their communities in Luzon, Visayas and Mindanao. The presentations primarily covered issues concerning education, infrastructures, livelihood, health and culture. Stakeholders from National Commission on Indigenous People (NCIP), Department of Agrarian Reform (DAR), Technical Education and Skills Development Authority (TESDA), Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR), Provincial Government of Aurora Province and Local Government Unit (LGU) of Maria Aurora also shared their comments and suggestions based on the IP leaders' presentations and most of them agreed to support the IPs with their ...

World No Tobacco Day ceremony at the Pan American Health Organization June 2nd 2011. Three tobacco control alliances—from Chile, Peru and around the world—will be honored by the Pan American Health Organization/World Health Organization (PAHO/WHO) as part of this year's World No Tobacco Day campaign. The three groups have all worked to support the development, adoption and implementation of the WHO Framework Convention on Tobacco Control (FCTC). The world's first international public health treaty, the FCTC obliges its country Parties to implement a series of standards and legal measures to reduce tobacco consumption and exposure to tobacco smoke for their populations. The three alliances to be honored by PAHO are: The Framework Convention Alliance, a coalition of 350 nongovernmental organizations working in public health, tobacco control, the environment and other areas, from more than 100 countries. The Alliance has provided resources, training, and other support for the development, adoption and ratification of the FCTC in countries around the world, including in Latin America and the Caribbean. The group is currently leading campaigns to ensure that FCTC implementation is included in the agenda and outcomes of the upcoming United Nations High-Level Summit on Non-communicable Diseases. Preserving the Vanishing Culture of the IfugaoMay 16, 2012

My American husband certainly is not alone as a foreigner with a keen interest in the Ifugao and our rice terraces. My people have been the subject of articles that date back to the early days of National Geographic magazine. Dean C. Worcester, then the secretary of the interior of the Philippine Islands, featured the Ifugao in a special September 1912 issue of the publication devoted entirely to the headhunters of northern Luzon. In that issue, he considered the Ifugao to be barbarians who were nonetheless excellent hydraulic engineers, as demonstrated by their marvelous rice terraces. Nine decades later, foreigners are still fascinated with headhunting. The practice was abandoned long ago by the Ifugao, but we still have not escaped that moniker. In the 2000 book The Last Filipino Head Hunters by David Howard, we are described, along with our sister tribes the Bontoc and Kalinga, as having among our elders the last living headhunters in the Philippines. I seriously doubt that anyone now alive has ever been a headhunter. Throughout the 1990s and into the 21st century, there has been continued interest in the direction and pending disappearance of our 2000-year-old rice ...
EEOC youth@workMay 19, 2012
Do you know how to deal with harassment and discrimination at work? Armed with a digital video camera, two Bay Area high school seniors interview young people at work, on the street and at school about tackling workplace harassment and discrimination. Kendra and Danielle created this short video as part of a month-long internship with the EEOC's Youth@Work Initiative, a campaign to ensure positive first work experiences for teens. (Special thanks to Jackie Alarcon and her Peer Resources classes at Galileo) Note from EEOC-San Francisco District: a captioned version of the video is on its way... until then here is the transcript of the video: "How many of you have witnessed sexual harassment on the job?" "Sometimes people go too far too, and when you go too far, we'll tell them, you know, like, 'don't say that.'" "It was sexist." "...remind you: at the store, the customer's always right." [screen title] What would you do? [voice over] Every year, millions of teenagers enter the workforce. Some are just looking for a summer job, some are saving up for a car, and others need money to support their family. But it can be hard to know what to expect from a first job, and sometimes teens have trouble standing up for their rights. As part of the Youth@Work campaign at the EEOC, we went out to talk to teen workers about workplace harassment and discrimination. [screen title] How would you respond to harassment or discrimination at work? "Probably just, uh, probably just keep it to ...

The FYCCN was created by the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC) and is supported by the Wildlife Foundation of Florida (WFF) and its partners. Some centers already exist, while others are still in the planning stages. The FWC, WFF and its partners want to help create the next generation that cares about Florida's great outdoors, fish and wildlife. They hope to get youth to care by getting them to the Florida youth centers. Over the last decade, children are increasingly more engaged in television, computers and other forms of entertainment media. Child, Youth and Family (CYF) Social workers, name-and-shame blogsiteDec 18, 2011
Social workers bid to close name-and-shame blogsite Five years after their baby son died in state care, a West Auckland family has hit back at the social workers involved by naming them on a renegade website aimed at holding such people to account. Four-month-old Patrick Martin died in a Methodist Mission family home two weeks after Child, Youth and Family Services (Cyfs) took him from his parents, Craig and Louise Martin, in May 2002. An inquest found the baby died of sudden infant death syndrome or cot death. However, in a posting on the blogsite, the Martins have alleged he was not being fed the right formula. The site, which gives the email address of another social worker and describes the personal appearance of several others in derogatory terms, has attracted a storm of protest from the Social Workers' Association, the Social Workers Registration Board and the Public Service Association. Ministry of Social Development chief executive Peter Hughes has instructed lawyers to "do whatever is necessary to get rid of this website". "We will be working 24/7 until that is done," he said. The site states: "This blogsite is dedicated to all those people who have been bullied, intimidated or 'familially raped' by the Department of Child, Youth, & Family: People, it's time to get your power back." The website invites people to email "name-and-shame" stories - "and we will publish them - uncensored". "Photos of any and all offending parties are welcome, together with private ...
